Strange Maps

Two of my favourite things are niche blogs and maps. Combine the two and you have Strange Maps.

If this kind of cartographical madness floats your boat, have a look…

Literary map of San Francisco

the-road-to-success

Allegorical map to “success” (I remember this from a print on someone’s wall from my childhood – thanks for the bizarre blast from the past, Strange Maps!)

whiteaustralia

…and this relic from the White Australia era which depicts a racist view of Asian immigrants. Strange map!

A glimpse into a great artist’s inspiration

Gerhard Richter’s comprehensive reference library, the Atlas Collection, can be seen online at www.gerhard-richter.com.

Kleinmania. Now slightly more popular than ever.

image image

The man who puts the Klein in Kleinmania (one of our senior designers at Amnesia Razorfish here) was interviewed by The Publics.

image

“Kerning is an interesting process because it can be very time consuming and it’s usually invisible, as in you only notice it when it’s bad … To my knowledge nobody has ever died from poor kerning.”

That tourist snap you don’t need to take

Have you ever stood in the exact spot that millions have stood before taking the exact photo of the exact view that millions have taken before I wondered “why am I doing this?”

I have taken this shot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge…

image

…and this shot of the Taj Mahal…

image

…but last year I specifically did not take this shot of Hong Kong from the Peak because I realised I could just Google it later.

image

Does this make me lazy or just practical? :-)

The images above were grabbed from Flickr searches and overlaid in Photoshop using overlay and screen blend modes.

History of Evil

First saw this animation in the creator’s student grad exhibition at UTS here in Sydney this December.

It just popped up on Boing Boing. I’m glad to see it’s gotten so much viewage and comments. Whether or not you agree with the angle of the storytelling, the visual style is brilliant.

Deep Sea Window Shopping

Lots of things to love about this Diesel Style Lounge designed by Germany AARF office Neue Digitale, but mostly the detail and thorough execution. Beautiful follow through on an immersive (literally) metaphor, great soundtrack, entertaining content snippets during load, stunning video integration, clever customisation of the cursor to be more “fish-like”… only criticism might be usability related when trying to figure out what’s clickable and what isn’t – getting around isn’t as easy as it could be.
